Exports to China was USD 9 billion, # while imports were USD 61.7 billion, leaving a trade deficit of USD 52.7 billion. In 2015-16, India's exports to China was USD 9 billion, while imports were USD 61.7 billion, leaving a trade deficit of USD 52.7 billion.   New Delhi: China on October 13 assured India that it will act on the concerns expressed by India on giving greater market access to domestic products to bridge the widening trade deficit. The issue, among others, was discussed during the meeting held here between Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Wang Shouwen, Vice Minister for Ministry of Finance and Commerce, China.
The Chinese minister is here to attend the 6th BRICS Trade Ministers' meeting. "The Chinese Vice Minister assured that China would act on the concerns expressed by India regarding market access for Indian goods in the Chinese markets," the commerce ministry said in a statement. During the meeting, Sitharaman raised concerns over the widening trade deficit between the two countries. Both the leaders exchanged notes on trade and commerce and agreed that the "mounting bilateral trade deficit has been a cause for concern for India" which seeks greater market access for its goods for a long-term sustainable trade relationship, it said.
Sitharaman requested expeditious clearances for import of Indian rice besides a Green Channel for import of Indian pharmaceutical products to China especially those which already have USFDA and EUFDA accreditation, it added. She also requested the Chinese Vice Minister to consider demonstration of IT/ITeS projects for Indian companies - which have acquired global acclaim. "She expressed concerns at the long drawn procedures for clearances which tend to frustrate the Indian companies seeking business opportunities in China," it added. Further Sitharaman asked for 'buying missions to India to source auto rubber amongst other things, Indian tobacco and oil meals. On the other hand, the Chinese Minister informed that recently China has quickened the pace of granting clearances to Indian pharma companies for import of the pharma products, it said. The Chinese Vice Minister also sought cooperation of India on various multilateral fora where China and India are engaged and assured that India’s concerns on a Single undertaking will be duly taken on board with services being an integral part of the cooperation agreement. In 2015-16, India's exports to China was USD 9 billion, while imports were USD 61.7 billion, leaving a trade deficit of USD 52.7 billion.

Prague-based Euro Security Products, or ESP, has been flooded by new orders from Germany for stun guns and can't keep up with demand. (Photo: AP)Prague-based Euro Security Products, or ESP, has been flooded by new orders from Germany for stun guns and can't keep up with demand. Prague: After the attacks in Paris and New Year's security scares, Germans have been snapping up self-defense equipment like stun guns - to the delight of a Czech manufacturer who corners the market.
Prague-based Euro Security Products, or ESP, has been flooded by new orders from Germany for stun guns and can't keep up with demand.Company owner Bretislav Kostal said demand began skyrocketing in September and the company delivered a total of 25,000 for the German market in 2015. Some 15,000 of those were in the last four months of the year."Our production capacity was 3,000 pieces a month. Now, we've been working to increase it to 4,000 a month," Kostal said.Ingo Meinhard, the head of the German association for weapons dealers, said the group had seen increasing interest in defensive products such as stun guns, CS gas and pepper spray following the attacks in Paris in November.Though official sales figures Rubber gasket were not yet available, he said there had been a further increase in demand following the New Year, which saw a terrorism scare in Munich in which two city stations were evacuated, as well as assaults on women by foreigners in Cologne.
Meinhard said it was less likely that the security concerns were about the influx of migrants and refugees into Germany. "It is in fact the terror threat, from our point of view," he said.He noted there was demand across generations and professions and from both sexes. He said that, previously, the typical customers tended to be people who worried about their safety after dark when night started falling earlier in the autumn."We think that most of these articles will never be used," he said, but rather serve the "psychological effect" of making people feel safer.Stun guns that disable people or animals with an electric shock are cleared for sale only in a few other European countries, including the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, France and soon Italy.
ESP was the first producer to meet strict requirements of the new German regulations in 2012 and claims to have about 90 percent share of the national market.Germany's kh-security GmbH & Co. KG, which distributes the Czech stun guns, confirmed the big rise in sales last year and another peak following the New Year's Eve security incidents."We're not in a position to react so quickly," Kostal said. "With the orders we have, we are sold out for the next three months."Besides the stun guns, ESP exports expandable batons, pepper sprays, shields, textile handcuffs and other products to more than 50 countries for individual customers as well as police and armed forces.

Exports to US goes up after withdrawal of benefits. Commerce minister Piyush Goyal Chennai: Though the government is reportedly pushing the US administration for resumption of export benefits to domestic products under the US Generalised System of Preferences (GSP), the export sector is not too keen on having the benefits, withdrawn by the US last June.Exporters rather look forward for positive steps towards a free trade agreement and tariff reduction on steel and aluminium exports. Though a full-fledged trade deal between India and the US looks unlikely now, with Trump himself saying on Tuesday that “I m O-Ring Kit Suppliers really saving the big deal for later on”, exporters are pinning their hopes on a likely ‘trade package’ during Trump’s India visit on February 24 and 25.
Commerce minister Piyush Goyal reportedly had several rounds of talks with US trade representative Robert Lighthizer over phone, demanding exemption from high duties imposed by the US on certain steel and aluminium products, resumption of export benefits to certain domestic products under the GSP, and greater market access for products in sectors like agriculture, automobile, auto components and engineering. It is not known what all are left on the table for inclusion in the trade package. As a developing country, India has been enjoying the benefits under US GSP programme since 1975.
As part of the trade war that Trump has opened on multiple fronts, the US withdrew 260 million benefits to Indian products under GSP. While the export community was worried about the impact of the withdrawal in June, they are not pushing for its restoration during the upcoming Trump visit.“Though the GSP benefits were withdrawn in June, the Indian exports to the US have grown in the second half of 2019 against the same period in 2018.Though there are a few export segments that have been hit by the GSP, overall there has not been any major impact of GSP on Indian exports to the US,”said Ajay Sahai, director general and CEO of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations.According to him, India should pursue a free trade agreement or a preferential trade agreement with the US that will be beneficial for traditional export sectors like textiles and leather, especially at a time when there is a standoff between the US and China.“Even if we do not sign a deal during the visit, we should have a meaningful interaction to bridge the gap,’ added Sahai.Indian exporters hope to see some reduction in tariffs on steel and aluminum, which were hiked in March 2018. The Trump administration had imposed tariffs of 25 per cent on 761 million of steel and of 10 per cent on 382 million of aluminum imported from India.“The 10 per cent tariff on aluminum imports did not affect us much, but our steel exports suffered by the 25 per cent tariffs. We look forward for some reduction in these tariffs,” said Sahai.
